“Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell

If you don’t know who Malcolm Gladwell is, you should.  He is one of my favorite authors that makes interesting observations about people, and writes about it.  I have read (or listened) to one other book from Malcolm called “David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants” that I also highly recommend you read.  These books really do have application for entrepreneurs and startups.  I had 15 people ahead of me on a wait list at the library to borrow this book. Now, I would like to add it to my collection.

Outiers studies several specific people and groups, such as hockey players, to identify what makes the outliers, outliers.  I do not wish to tell you  the conclusion at the end, because that would ruin the book.  For me, I just took in every word and was so interested in the entire book.  I would say more about it, but I do not want to spoil it for any of my readers that want to check it out.  But, I never completely understood “outliers” before reading this book, like I understand them now.

Description of book from the author’s page:

“There is a story that is usually told about extremely successful people, a story that focuses on intelligence and ambition. Gladwell argues that the true story of success is very different, and that if we want to understand how some people thrive, we should spend more time looking around them-at such things as their family, their birthplace, or even their birth date. And in revealing that hidden logic, Gladwell presents a fascinating and provocative blueprint for making the most of human potential.

In The Tipping Point Gladwell changed the way we understand the world. In Blink he changed the way we think about thinking. In OUTLIERS he transforms the way we understand success.”
